Flash new firmware to Faces Encoder

Hey,
I am using the faces encoder in a project and the I’d like to disable the led ring feedback when you click the encoder. I found the firmware of the encoder on github so there must be a way to flash new code to it.
Do I use the pin header on the inside and an Arduino as an ISP?
Could you provide some more information on the process please?
