M5Stack AWS IoT Edukit - VSCode outputs Rainmaker QR Code as binary

I have followed requirements and instructions as per: https://edukit.workshop.aws/en/getting-started/run-rainmaker.html
However the QR code is not displayed correctly and seems to be binary data similar to thins in PlatformIO serial monitor:
␀��␀x�x��xx���xxx�x��x�x��x�x�x��␀������␀��x␀�x�x�␀�x��␀��x␀����������x�x��x�␀x������xx␀��␀x�x�x�xx�␀x�x��x��x��␀��␀x�x��xx���xxx�x��x�x��x�x�x��␀����␀x␀�x�x��x�xx␀��␀x�x�x�x�x�x␀x�xxx�x��␀x
I've found some old posts about this being a VSCode issue but no solution.
Suggestions welcome.

hello, could you please attach a screenshot of your serial monitor to understand more? have you made sure that the baudrate is correct?
