M5Core 2 and M5Core 3 will not light display

M5Basic runs sketches and sprites well connected to my MacBook Air (OS14.1.2). Using same setup and cable to two new M5Core2's and a M5Core3 will not even light the display, even after after pushing power and reset buttons. Core-specific libraries are loaded, Core 2-specific sketches tested, wch...serial port selected, and appropriate boards are selected, both Mac drivers are loaded.. What am I doing wrong?

Do they work if you write the UIFlow firmwares to them using M5Burner?
Are you programs actually supposed to display things on screen?
