Some modules use the same GPIO - in this case only one module can be actively used at a time.

It would be a good idea to add some jumpers on such modules to select the communication pins.
There is plenty of space on the board for that purpose.

All ESP32 applications running on any ESP32 board, including M5Stack are built using esp-idf.
esp-idf is not FreeRTOS. FreeRTOS is included into esp-idf (as a component) and is slightly modified version of the official FreeRTOS (see esp-idf documentation).
The mentioned drivers are not the part of the esp-idf, but are built on-top of esp-idf and uses the esp-idf API.

Great news, but make shure that the new board is degned in a way that the total power consumption of all the additional circuitry (except ESP32 itself) can be reduced to at least <100 uA, otherwise it wont be very useful.

cp210x driver on Ubuntu works without any problem.
There is no difference between M5Stack and other ESP32 boards using the same USB to UART chip (related to the communication with the PC).
I can communicate with the M5Stack same as with other ESP32 boards I have (flash, terminal, etc.).
Built applications runs the same on M5Stack as on other ESP32 boards I have.

There is nothing specific to M5Stack which should cause behaviour different than other ESP32 boards.

Could you share the Samtec header part number and the seller's link ?

I've just received the M5Paper and I can say it is an excelent device with quite a low price for what it includes.

There is only one thing that I'm not quite happy about. The white of the display is much more gray than on any other ePaper display I have (most of them from Waveshare).
Is it because of the touch screen panel or the display itself is like that? Can it be improved?
For the 16 gray levels ePaper it is quite important to have a good contrast ratio.

Congratulations on an excelent product, I think it will be a great success.

When building with esp-idf you can use M5Satck just like any other ESP32 development board.
All esp-idf examples, for example, will run on M5Stack same as on any other board.

You may have some issues when using C++. Please cunsult the documentation and ESP32 forum. There are many threads related to C++ issues/questions.

You could use USB cable with right angle connector, like this one, I don't think it looks ugly.
You can remove the USB-A connector on the other side, and attach whatever power source you have.

You don't need to check anything, just configure spi for lower speed.
There is not much sense in using fast spi clock with LoRa module, 1 MHz is probably enough.

BTW, there are some LoRa modules which operates over serial port (UART) which are quite easy to use (like this one or this one).

LoRa-E5 (STM32WLE5JC) Module is also very interesting and supports LoRaWAN too.

You can configure SPI to work with (almost) any GPIO on ESP32.

It is quite easy to display any kind of indicator about power state on screen, small (or large) icon, text, etc...

This device has an ePaper display which reflects the light and is readable similarly to the ordinary paper. You will be able to read it in the lighting conditions in which you can read the paper book.
Just turn the light on.
Some (rare) ePaper displays have the frontlight module on top of the display, like this one, but M5Paper does not have such a module.

In case of ESP32 you can measure power consumption with practically any multimeter in uA range.
If the current is < 5-10 uA you have an excelent low power device.
You will rarely need the information about power consumption in sub uA range and investing any amount in a device for measuring current of ESP32 deep sleep mode is probably waste of money (unless you need it for other measurements, of course).

I think it could be also usefull to make available some IT8951 documentation. It is hard to find and could be very usefull for developers.

RTC current is <1uA, so it should not be a problem.
